Stump Grinding

Residential and commercial stump grinding across Metro Detroit — any size, any location, ready to replant or resod.

About this service

We grind stumps well below grade with industrial equipment that fits through gates and handles the largest, most difficult stumps. Cleanup and chip removal options included — leaving the area ready for sod, replanting, or hardscaping.

Residential stump grinding

That old stump in the yard is a lawnmower obstacle, a tripping hazard, and a beacon for termites and carpenter ants. We grind it out so you can move on with the landscape.

Large & difficult stumps

Cottonwoods, silver maples, and old oaks leave stumps that a rental grinder won't touch. Our commercial equipment handles diameters most homeowners can't tackle themselves.

Grinding depth

Standard grinds go 6"–8" below grade — enough to replant grass or lay sod. Deeper grinds are available when you're planning to plant a new tree or pour concrete.

Root-flare grinding

Big trees leave root flares that spread several feet from the trunk. We grind out the flares where they'll cause problems for mowing, landscaping, or hardscape.

Access through gates

Our compact grinder fits through standard gates and around tight backyard access — so you don't have to take down the fence to get the stump out.

Cleanup options

Chips can be left in the hole as mulch (the cheapest option), spread across the yard as mulch, or hauled away entirely — your call.

Preparing for sod, replanting, or building

For sod or a new lawn, we backfill with topsoil on request. For a new tree, we grind deeper so the roots don't hit the old stump. For a patio or shed, we clear it out completely.

Stump grinding after removal

Adding stump grinding to your tree removal is almost always cheaper than scheduling it as a separate visit — ask about the bundled price when you get your removal quote.

Factors that affect price

  • Stump diameter and species
  • Depth of grind
  • Access to the stump (gate width, obstacles)
  • Whether chips are removed or left on-site
  • Number of stumps on the property

Frequently asked questions

How deep do you grind?+

Standard is 6"–8" below grade — enough for grass, sod, or landscaping. Deeper grinds are available for replanting or construction.

Do you remove the chips?+

That's your choice. Leaving chips in the hole is the cheapest option; hauling them away costs a bit more but leaves the area clean and ready to work with.

Will the grinder fit through my gate?+

In most cases, yes — our compact grinder fits through a standard 36" gate. If access is tight, we'll confirm during the estimate.

How long does stump grinding take?+

Most single-stump jobs take 30 minutes to an hour on-site, including cleanup.
